Roman and Byzantine city on the bank of the river Nišava. Built by the Romans in I century. It was located on the important Roman military road Via militaris, between Nis and Sofia. The city was surrounded by walls. At its center there is a square, Forum, surrounded by porticos, with Jupiter's Temple and the basilica. On the site we can see the remains of a large villa with a backyard (peristyle) and remains of early Christian churche. The city was further fortified in IV c., which reflects its contemporary significance. It was restored during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the VI c. Remesiana was a significant early Christian center, a place of pilgrimage and the bishopric. Nicetas, famous Christian theologian and bishop was born and worked (in IV c.) in Remesiana. He is probably the author of the well-known Christian hymn Thee God we praise (Latin: Te Deum).
