Santa Maria delle Grazie, Italy

The current building is shaped according to the Baroc style revision done in 1640. In reality the basilica dates back to the forth/fifth century with revisions of the sixth century. The façade with a doble slope, in origin it was preceded by an atrium. Inside it has three aisles, divided by columns, mostly in Greek marble with Byzantines capitals. The altar is enclosed by an Iconostasis rebuilt with part of the ancient pergula. Also here in Grado, the link with the Byzantine area finds its most relevant elements in the religious architecture and tradition. To che case of of the Byzantine capitals of the basilica of S. Maria delle Grazie, it is a mirror the cult of the image of the Byzantine Our Lady that is worshipped in the close Island of Barbana, that is reported to have been established by the patriarch Elia in the year 582, after that a storm has transported the image to the island.
